Don't have any direct experience. Phone rental outfits are offering
Motorola 8767's for rent in Argentina. That's 1900mhz and AMPS service,
like the network and phones Sprint uses.
I'd expect some kind of prepay service offered by a CDMA 1900 carrier.
Wouldn't count on being able to activate a Verizon handset on a foreign
carriers prepay system. Technically, an unlocked handset, that operates
at the correct cdma frequency, could work.
There appears to be GSM 900 and 1900mhz providers.
Global GSM roaming with an unlocked phone and country specific prepay
SIM is usually the easiest solution.
Verizon does not even provide reliable support where they are suppose
to offer international roaming.
