QNC Internet Access Question

In my home area (around Albuquerque) I have had no problems using qnc
access or Express Network access with my LG4400.   We are now in
eastern OK with both digital and analog Verizon Extended Network
service.   When I try to sign on from either my laptop or Palm, I get
an Authenication Error.   Should I not expect to be able to use qnc
access from out of my home area???

Your getting Authentication error because your not on Verizon!
Extended Network means your roaming onto an other company.. You will need to
use a different dialup ISP, or use that companies model pool.. You can call
their 611 and ask if they have QNC Internet access on their network. Ask
them the number and the username/password their system requires. But keep in
mind, not all digital carriers have data enabled on their network. US
Cellular doen't in Central Washington! Even a regular dialup ISP will not
work!

Thanks for the responses.   I was pretty sure that was the case.

Does this also mean that the PCMCIA  Air Card for laptops that Verizon
sells will also not work except in ones home area?   If so sure does
defeat the purpose since my laptop goes pretty much where I go when I
am on travel.

Thanks again,

Frank

Frank,
You don't have to be in your Home area, just on the Verizon network.  OK
and a few other states do have little Verizon data coverage.

Looking at this map, you can access the data network in all of the
places marked on this map, not just your Home area:

I think I get it now.  I was under the impression that being on the
Extended Network would mean that all services  (except maybe Express
Network) would be available and this is not true as you pointed out.

Since Alltel is the service provider here and since they are partners
with Verizon, I just assumed that qnc data service would be available
and it is not.   What was also strange was that the LG4400 display
showed completion of a QNC call but then the signon process was aborted
with the auth failure and ended the call.    Wonder why a qnc call
would even be accepted by Alltel if the data service was not
available??
Why not give a more reasonable error like: Service Not Available??

Thanks to everyone for the responses,

Frank

It will work in any Verizon digital area, not just your home area.
There are also some roaming partners where you can use your AirCard to
call your own ISP (not #777), but this is pretty much hit-or-miss.

it will work out of your home area, just not on Extended Network, because
your actually not on verizons network right now.

OK, I checked and I am on Alltel when I get the auth error.   I thought
that Alltel qnc access is exactly  the same as Verizon: #777, qnc/qnc
and I have the NSR Verizon plan so something else must be going on???

Maybe Alltel doesn't support data access in this part of OK, but that
is pretty hard to believe.

Alltel does offer QNC (14.4 Kbps) data, but I dont know their
username/password info, or if it is in fact #777 like Verizon.
Call 611 from the Alltel area your in, and ask one of their reps the
information.
If they dont know, ask to speak to someone in tech. support or data
services.

I am also on NSR. Have you tried setting up a connection directly to your ISP
regular number that you use at home?  I have no problem doing that when qnc
doesn't connect AS LONG AS I am on digital. The feed through is slower though.

I have AC and while roaming on Alltel in western Kansas I have have used
QNC.  #777, qnc, qnc - just like when on Verizon.
Since I had EN-MOU added to my account I have not been able to connect
to QNC @ 19.2K.  I have only been able to connect to EN @ 115.2K.
Have not tried to connect outside of the EN area since the change.

You may have to make a change to a setting in the phone from packet data
to circuit data. EN and QNC use different data connections. Geoff, who will
surely see this, :-) always has the init strings which allow you to do this
from the PC rather than mucking about in the phone which is a pain on the
Motorola T720 (it was easy on the Audiovox 9155).

I really have not needed QNC since getting EN, but this was a problem
with my Alltel account as their 1x footprint was only a small portion of
their coverage area. I needed to use QNC when out of 1x coverage and had to
switch the phone back and forth.
