I want to get a VZ phone but would like some input on which one of their
phones is the best for the money.  Looking for a small flip.

Thanks.  I just bought the T730 and am now wondering if I should have gotten
a different one.

thanks

Well I went from the StarTac 7868W to the LG VX4400 and its the best
phone I have used so far. And I have used quite a few. From the NEC
Bag phones, Nokia, Sony, Qualcomm, 2 different Motorola phones (old
grey flip & StarTac), and a couple others over the years which names
escape me. This starting back when cellular started. Cellular One
(Albany Telephone Company) I was the 403 customer and stayed with them
for many a year. (They had terrible billing problems and after so many
years of calling to get my bill fixed)  I Then went the route of Bell
Atlantic Mobile, Nynex, Verizon and what ever name they change into in
the future :-)

The 4400 is an excellent phone as are most LG phones.

I don't know anything about the T730 or its price, but I picked up an LG
VX10 from VZW for $70 ($170 - 50 rebate - 50 discount (w/ 2-year agmt.)).

Great audio quality and reception.. I don't like its menu system much, and
the buttons are too recessed into the keypad making it a bit harder to
push them.. but it's small, sturdy, has good battery life, and sounds
great.

What do you want a phone to do?  What else besides make calls? How small
is small enough?

I want good user friendly software including a smartly designed contact
list,  easy access to multiple phone book entries, easy text messaging,
ability to easily plug phone numbers from phone book into "send to" lists
for texts and email.

I have all that with the Samsung A310. It's almost perfect. I say almost
because the ONLY thing it doesn't do that I really wish it did was show time
in 24 hour format (military time) as most phones do. I hate am/pm.

Personally I like almost anything from motorola.  If you can hold out
till probably after Christmas, they might have a new phone coming out to
fit your bill.

The LG 4400 is much better than the Motorola. If you read this newsgroup
regularly, you would know this.

You would know that some people claim it is.  I've yet to hear someone
who knows what he's talking about explain exactly why that is, though.

Under the battery, where the Motorola says CHINA, speaks volumes.

And the LG probably says Korea - what's the difference?

Are there any current celular telephones made in the USA?  I was under the
impression that the last USA built Motorola was a Timeport...

Yep.  My 2+ year old StarTac says "made in China" and the Motorola battery
attached says "made in Japan."  Too expensive to make things in the US so
companies haved stop trying to do it.

I bumped into the guy who set me up with my first phone (a brick in 1991).
I asked him what a good phone was nowadays and he showed me his P8767
Timeport flip-phone.  He said it was the last great phone.  I probably
agree.  I'm using a vx4400 now which replaced the T720 that didn't work.
I'd still be using my P8767 if it hadn't suffered an untimely death.  (Well,
maybe not - I can use my laptop with the LG.)

There are still several P8767s on e-Bay.  You can swap in the phone into service
whenever you want on the Verizon web (for most parts of the US).

I'm waiting to read a review that states that a new phone has better "RF",
"volume" and "sound quality" than the P8767.  Okay, even equal would do it.

I'll pass. I went through three horrible Motorola T730s in two weeks before
getting my A310 which I absolutely love. Each of the 730s were crap, some
had problems the others didn't. All of them dropped calls constantly, would
not ring 25% of the time, headset volume was pitiful and the huge color
display would drain a full battery on 45 minutes if you're doing a lot of
texting, email etc. And more...
John Squire - 08 Oct 2003 02:28 GMT
My dad's got a T720 and hates it, so I'm not surprised about the 730 not
being that great either.  I had the old star tac anolog, and now I'm
using the i90 from Nextel.  Love both phones, battery life is great for
calling.  I use about 1200 minutes a month and I can get a battery to
last me about 2 days without charging.  One of the reasons I do like my
Motorolas though is cause they can take a beating.  Strayed away from
them once, and the phone just couldn't hack my lifestyle.  I used to
work factory security and the motorolas held up.  Sorry about your
problems with the 730 maybe they will get it right in the next model?

Regarding the LG VX10. I've been informed that Verizon is no longer
using providing the LG VX10. This is bad news if , like me , you have
standardized on this model for your organization and have a large
investment in accessories. Granted, cell phone models and styles
change faster than PCs, even so, I'm now looking to purchase about a
dozen to use as replacements for when the displays get crunched. Does
anyone know if there are replacement LCD displays for the VX10 ?
