I have a Nokia 3589i and Nokia DKU-5 Cable and Nokias software and drivers.
Installed as a type 2. and get error 691 access denied because of bad user
id and password
I am dialing #777 and using qnc as both userid and password.

Just out of curiosity, where did that phone come from? Nokia doesn't show a
3589i in it's model list. Sure you got the model # right?

At the risk of being hooked by a troll, a Google search turned up
this as the first link when searching for 'Nokia 3589i':

Okay, just wondering, I went to http://www.nokia.com/ , clicked on phones,
and it doesn't show the 3589i there. Just couldn't find the tech specs, and
was looking for what type 2 was. (I use both qnc and express, but with a
Kyocera, had an error 691 when the userid/password was wrong, but hard to
debug when you can't find the tech manual). Don't know if it helps any, but
for the kyocera at least, the error 691 was because I had the encoding set
wrong (7 bit rather than 8 bit).

Model # is right, and my guess is he just needs the same initialization
strings that have been posted here time and time again. I don't have them
handy, a quick Google for it should turn up the results.

Alternately, he can just change the username to PHONENUMBER@vzw3g.com,
password 'vzw' and use the 1xRTT (Express Network MOU) that's provisioned
on his account, since the 3589i is a 1x and Brew phone.

Interesting. I've installed my 3589i/modem (under W2K) as a 3G modem.
Communications to the Nokia Suite, and modem probes work fine.

The manual tells me not to add AT commands if it's installed as a 3G: If i try
to connect using #777 and login/password as above I get error 678 (no answer),
after a brief delay: does that mean I'm not in an 1x region? (downtown Seattle)
(If I add AT commands, that would purport to put it in 3G mode, I get
different errors, but still no initial connection).

If I add AT commands for a QNC login (AT+CRM=0;+CSO=12), and use qnc/qnc I
get a 14.4K connection. (phone#@vzw3g.com is not an accepted login).

Mobile web connections work and seem fast but I cannot tell if it's greater
than 14.4k

Is there something I'm doing wrong for 1x, or is this an indication I'm not
in a 1x area, or am I not infact not provisioned for 1x?

Any experiences or pointers about the 3589i and 1x would be appreciated...  Thanks.

I have the 3589i and DKU-5 Data Cable and I was fully able to dial
#777 and use qnc, qnc to access the internet.  Ensure you have mobile
web enabled to do this though.

Are you set up for high speed or low speed?  You have to set your
"modem" for a low speed connection (at$qcmdr=2).
