For some reason, the icon that looks like o_o appeared on my screen and
can't be deleted / erased / eliminated even though I have no voicemail
messages.
Verizon, in my area (Sacramento, CA) has an optional setting to delete or
erase the voicemail waiting indicator, but when I use that, it has no
effect.
Nokia USA on the phone said I can't do anything to the phone to control that
icon, only my carrier can. My carrier is Tracfone, but in my area, my
service is provided by Verizon, on behalf of Tracfone.
The model of phone is the Nokia 5180i, which has much in common with the
entire Nokia 5100 series, I believe.
How can I make this voicemail icon disappear?

Call you provider. They can remove it just like this.

Nokia is right - that indicator is set when the network tells the phone you
have voicemail.
I don't know what Verizon did recently here in the Los Angeles market, but
my voicemail indicator finally RELIABLY turned off as soon as I read and/or
deleted messages just this past week. Earlier this year, when I lived in Ohio,
it started working properly after they did a major voicemail upgrade.
The phone doesn't control the display of the message-waiting icon. If it
doesn't go off, either you have text messages waiting (I forget whether the
Nokias use the same icon for both; my Kyocera does), or you should call and
have VZW reset it. It's supposed to turn off within a few minutes of you
retrieving all of your unread messages.
If you have problems, call Verizon.

This occurs (at least with me) when I'm on "extended network" (Alltel
for example). I get a call, it goes to voice mail. I get the icon. I
check voice mail. The icon stays until I go back to VZW territory
where it resets. Very annoying!

I called Tracfone, which called Verizon, which told Tracfone they can't turn
off the icon (didn't try).
Tracfone's advice: Live with it.
I might try calling Verizon directly, but they don't have to talk to me
directly. I'm a Tracfone subscriber, and the deal is I'm supposed to go
through Tracfone for all my support.
