earlier this week my contract expired with verizon wireless. My
handset also decided to call it quits a day later. I took it to a VZW
store with tech support to see if the handset could be repaired . (it
was a nokia 3285i i broke the jack where the charger plugs in needed
to be resoldered). The tech asked for the phone # punched up some
stuff in the computer seen my contract was up. he then pretended to
look at the broken handset and tells me you need a new phone and
directed me to the CS desk to go get a new phone and sign a new
contract. I did NOT do that but instead just walked out of the store.
I came back home and called VZW and canceled service. CS told me if i
changed my mind call back with in two weeks and the account could be
restored. After that i stopped at walmart. They had a simplefreedom
phone which i bought. It is thru alltel that is reselling verizon
airtime at a prepaid rate of 25 cents a minute and 50 cents roaming.
Now the jackpot question. I like this nokia 3585i phone that alltel
has for this simplefreedom plan. VZW never sold this phone. If i
restore the VZW postpay account will this phone go on ??? Dialing a
wrong number gets you VZW recording to the effect number cannot be
completed yadda yadda i know this is running on VZW. If this is
possible i need HELP FAST as the clock is running otherwise i will
keep the prepay account thru alltel before i sign another contract.

There's a simple workaround my friend has been using for the last
year, if your orignial phone still works. Just buy a desktop nokia
charger and extra battery and just swap the charged batteries.
Verizon is not going to solder a jack, even if it looks "easy". That
was not a trick to get you to sign up for another years service, just
a way to get a cheaper replacement phone. They don't work on anyones
phones, except maybe for and antenna replacement, flash or phonebook
swap.
You can buy a working phone for very cheap on ebay. Why be in such a
rush to cancel service?
Can't you find a spare handset from someone for temporary use?
Service and the handset have little to do with each other, unless
there no handy "spare".
Might be interesting to try an online ESN swap?
I believe a Verizon software flash would be required to make the
prepaid Alltel handset work properly. Not sure if the prepaid handset
is locked to Alltel. Likely yes, but you can always ask if they will
activate it.
