Anyone can change the Caller ID to show up as any phone number they
want. On TechTv reformed hacker Kevin Mitnick called Leo Leport and
the number that showed up on Leo's phone was that of the White House,
1-202-450-1414.

All "anyone" has to do is buy a T-1 line, provision it as an ISDN PRI
line, and buy a small phone switch to put on the end of it. The phone
company will believe whatever CallerID you program your switch to send
out. So for few thousand dollars and a few hundred dollars per month for
the PRI line, you can send whatever Caller ID you want. If it's really
worth it to you...

Or if you don't mind the "real" caller id also showing up, you can
send the caller ID tones after the called party answers. Some caller
ID boxes are not smart enough to ignore caller ID sent AFTER the called
party answers.

you can do it with a PBX system very easily, when I worked at Lucent, I
modified my CID to show up with lucent security's number..

Kevin did it in the studio from his cell phone.

But we all assumed that he simply called Leo's phone as shown. We don't know
if he called some other number which forwarded to Leo after doing some
"magic"

The server's a little slow.  In fact, it died at 4% download.

If you had seen the show, you would have   noticed that he said i
wasn't public. So how do you know how he did it

If you would quote what you are replying to, we would know what you
are talking about.

Almost certainly some magic happened.  He probably dialed into a PBX
that was pre-modified to send the false CID info, used the outcall
feature, and the deed is done.  It's an old trick.

Now, if he had managed to call an 800 number and show that the real time
ANI could be spoofed to show the same white house call-in number, then
I'd be impressed. :)

The caller ID comes from the switch and not the phone. There is no way to make
it show anything other than what it is.

Call Waiting Caller ID can be spoofed by an appropriate
audio passage during a call. For more on this subject, see:

So you think he called Leo via the White House!  Yikes! Security
must be lax... -:)

Once again, John only reads the subject line of each thred, paying no
attention to the content of any messages.
