Mitch - 13 Mar 2004 18:09 GMT It's on the VZW web site now - I know some in this newsgroup have seen the mockup but I was wondering if anyone has yet found an actual functioning model in a store and either played with it or bought it.

Todd B - 13 Mar 2004 22:59 GMT I looked at one today and it was very small. It didn't have any power so i couldn't test it. No valuable assment here other than the way it looks and slides.

A little premature on the digital only phones. While that may be where its headed, there's plenty of rural areas still AMPS, and I wouldn't want to be with out it.
Gary - 17 Mar 2004 02:20 GMT I have one and I like it very much. I like it's size, the keys are small, but they are very acurate when pressed. There are some great features that I like. It has an airplane mode which allows you to deactivate any incoming and outgoing radio frequencies, but it allow you to use the interface for games, schedules, and editing the database. I like the address book, it lets you hold up to 200 names with subset numbers per name. Not like the other phone I had that had a name for each number. It has a very acurate voice recognition system in it which allows me to place a voice to a name and I can also speak the number into it. However, you can only speak 1 digit at a time. It's a neat phone! I like the ringtones, which are very subtle and smooth sounding. The volume is great and I can hear just fine. The hands free options are good to. So, compared to my Motorola T730, this phone is great and I can see it hitting the market well.
Mitch - 18 Mar 2004 00:58 GMT I was able to play with one at a Verizon store on Monday.
I thought the display was rather washed-out looking compared to some other current color phones. (I set the contrast as high as possible and still it looked poor by comparison.) The earpiece volume and speakerphone volume seemed good. However, as I was examining it, a woman standing nearby said to me, "I returned one of those today." I asked her why, and she said that when she used it, her voice (on the other end) sounded like it was created by a synthesizer.
Still, the size was appealing.

IMO, this is by far the best thing about Kyocera phones. I love their contact list options and management.

Al Bundy - 20 Mar 2004 00:34 GMT It does have a speakerphone and it works pretty well. Al.

I've been noticing Verizon seems to have set a priority to aggressively market digital only phones. Seems that a number of Verizon phones have versions without analog enabled. I suspect they are trying to tighten up their network and reduce roaming fees to analog partners. Perhaps this is part of a move to put pressure on those partners to upgrade to CDMA. One things for certain, it's the would be AMPs roamers, with digital only handsets that are going to be left stranded, in the short term. And they won't even know a call could be made on some available analog network.
They new Verizon contract wording states that 911 calls won't be able to connect, unless the handset can receive a digital signal...:-(

I forget what the actual percentages and dates are, but once a carrier can show that less than x% of it's user base uses analog, then they can shut AMPS down. Once they stop offering phones with AMPA capability, they'll hit that number a lot quicker.
Steven J Sobol - 20 Mar 2004 17:20 GMT > They new Verizon contract wording states that 911 calls won't be able > to connect, unless the handset can receive a digital signal...:-( Is that legal?
WTF? So my trimode can't make a 911 call in analog?
What happens in places like Kingman, AZ and much of off-interstate KY where there *is* no CDMA coverage?

Unfortunately, yes. They aren't keeping you from accessing AMPS service per se. The phone is preventing it. I think the wording change was made in anticipation of VZW (and other carriers) no longer offering AMPS capable phones.
>WTF? So my trimode can't make a 911 call in analog? Yes, as long as it can hit an analog signal.

Dude. Sprint is looking better and better, and I'm not one to consider switching just because. Sprint is *all* CDMA, but ferchrissakes, at least they have native coverage in Western AZ. It's a *sad* day when I'll consider Sprint over Verizon due to coverage issues - I have both, and enjoy using SPCS, but have not switched *my* main phone over because I figure I may need AMPS coverage sometime.

CharlesH - 23 Mar 2004 22:16 GMT >>> They new Verizon contract wording states that 911 calls won't be able >>> to connect, unless the handset can receive a digital signal...:-( ???? Are they saying that if you have an AMPS-capable phone, that it won't connect to 911 in AMPS mode????!!!!

Are they saying that if you have an AMPS-capable phone, that it >won't connect to 911 in AMPS mode????!!!! No, if you have an AMPS capable phone, and you have power to it, you will hit an AMPS signal where it is available. The phone doesn't even need to be active on an account. But if a sufficient native digital signal exists, it will go for that first.

Sorry Steven, I wasn't clear. The contract fine print was refering to a digital only phone's 911 limitation. A digital only phone won't be able to make a 911 call unless it receives a digital signal.

JLP - 23 Mar 2004 04:04 GMT I have a Slider phone. I like it pretty well. I'm honestly not a fan of flip phones. The biggest drawback I see is that you can't use the always exposed keypad buttons on the upper half of the phone. It is very small though. I prefer the smaller phones--I think this is one of the smallest phones I have seen. It does have the standard Kyocera features that pretty much all the new color phones have. The case that verizon proivdes if you purchas accessories is a bit of a problem--you have to unsnap the case to use the phone. The voice dial is great, but the phone must be plugged in to a power source to use voice dial 100%. It appears that the PC synch cable is a special cable for this phone only. It looks like another similar pivot hinged phone may have a similar/same cable. If you spend the 40.00 on the cable you are stuck with it.
I think I like this almost as much as the non-functioning KX414 I had. I just wish that phantom never had the ringer issues, and I'd still be with it.

JLP - 25 Mar 2004 05:24 GMT Well, I posted earlier. I love the phone. I just wish the ying yangs at VZW would have thought about keeping the silent mode shortcut. You can't even assign it to the up key. It's "not available". That's one feature I love on the phones...being able to turn on and off the ringer at ease. I don't like my phone ringing in meetings or classes. I have to push 5 buttons/movements to get this to happen and 9 for it to unhappen each time. Is that user friendly or what! Thank you VZW. You disabled a feature that would be extremely usefull! :)
