Using Nokia 3589i as FAX modem

I use my 3589i as a data modem (with the DKU-5 cable) with my Windows
XP laptop.  I usually use Verizon's 3G network, but as a test I have
connected using the data/fax modem driver to my ISP and that works
fine.

However, I'd like the ability to send/receive faxes with the phone,
and I can't figure out how to set that up.  I am trying to use the
built-in Windows XP Fax Console.  The Data/Fax modem driver (or
whatever it's called) for the phone is installed and I have used it
for data.  I have figured out that in order to let me pick the Nokia
as a modem, I need to have the phone turned on and plugged in before
Windows starts up.  So far, I have been able to choose the Nokia as
the modem and initiate a test fax, but it just keeps failing when it
tries to send.

Anyone have any better luck using their 3589i as a fax modem?

How did you get your Nokia 3589i set up for Verizon's 3G network?
Do you have to subscribe to National access?
Does Verizon offer the Mobile Office Kit software for this phone without the
cable or can I just use Nokia's PC Suite (I have the Nokia DKU-5 on order)?

Thanx!

: How did you get your Nokia 3589i set up for Verizon's 3G network?

You must install the modem driver for the phone first.  This is
probably on the CD that comes with the DKU-5 cable, but I had already
downloaded the drivers from Nokia's website.

Then, you setup a new dial-up connection in Windows dial-up
networking.  Your dial phone number is #777.  your username is
<wireless-number>@vzw3g.com  .  Your password is "vzw" (no quotes).

That's it.

: Do you have to subscribe to National access?

Well, yes, but it is a free add-on (automatic) with the America's
Choice plan.  You get it by default.  This allows you to use 3G just
like regular voice minutes.  if you have another plan other than AC,
you will probably need to subscribe.

No, they don't offer an office kit, but you get a CD with the cable I
think.  I didn't even use it - I just downloaded PC Suite from their
website plus grabbed the modem drivers.

Thanx alot!!!
I had purchased the PC3220 laptop card but did not feel it was worth another
$79.99/month so I cancelled that number.
Do you know if there is an option to add the extra MB National Access plans
to my current number (20 MB/$39.99, 60MB/$59.99, Unlimited/$79.99) or would
that be a question for customer care?
BTW, how do you like the speeds?
I used to use Sprint PCS Vision with my laptop and it was decent compared
with dialup.
How does National Access compare with dialup?  It has to be better, right?

Anyways, thanx again.  I will wait for your reply and won't bother you
again.

That would be a question for customer care, as I have the America's
Choice plan.  Do you have a different plan?  With America's Choice,
there is no charge for download size - just cell minutes like you were
making a voice call.

I have read (here or on Howard Forums) that you used to be able to get
"extended network" (old name for national network) added to your plan
if you asked with the right terminology.  When you call, *don't* ask
for a "feature" - then they'll just try to sell you an internet
package.  What you want is an add-on to your current plan, not a new
feature.

: BTW, how do you like the speeds?

So-so.  It's good for working in a pinch when you can't get WiFi, but
you can tell it seems sometimes slow.  I think your real speed is
limited to the equivalent of about 56K even though my computer claims
it is connected much faster than that (200+Kbps).  I think that higher
number is just the connection rate between the phone and my computer.

I would not want to use my phone as my primary internet access.

Not really.

No problem.  You can get a lot more information from
http://www.howardforms.com (it is down as I type this).  Just search
the Verizon forum for "3589i data" or "3589i internet".

I use "national access" for Internet access when away from home.
I ran speed tests and got download speeds above 90K.
This is not as fast as cable but twice as fast as my landline Dial-up.
