Earthlink, formerly Mindspring, is my ISP. My e-mail addresses are all
Mindspring, not Earthlink. I am able to download my e-mail OK but not
able to send any. Apparently I need to change my outgoing mail (SMTP)
server settings from mail.mindspring.com to something else. Does anyone
know what that might be?

Contact Earthlink support. I suspect that you will have to
change your smtp server to Earthlink's. I'd try smtp.earthlink.com
and mail.earthlink.com if you just want to give it a shot before
calling. Many ISPs restrict access to their outgoing mail servers
to their own network IP addresses (source address must be in
their IP address range). Most allow access from outside IP
addresses if they authenticate first. Call Earthlink support.

EarthLink has a separate SMTP server that works on third party networks.
It's smtpauth.earthlink.net. Of course, you have to configure the email
program to input the id & password. Note: The id part should be your full
email address.

The post by Leo is correct.
You need to go to your Account Setup in Outlook Express (or whatever your
using.
Make sure the outgoing server is correct, and that it sends your
user/password for sending messages (beneath the sending server address).

I am now able to send e-mail by using mail.airbridge.net.
Mail.smtpauth.earthlink.net would not work.

It's 'smtpauth.earthlink.net'
Drop 'mail'
I first found out about it when I signed up for international roaming with
Earthlink. It costs nothing to sign up. I don't know if they require that
you be signed up in order to be authorized to use smtpauth.earthlink.net

You are confusing the password for connecting to the internet via a Verizon
dial port and the password required for sending mail through a SMTP relay
that requires user authentication (Earthlink in the case under discussion)
for off net use.

I tried it both ways. Still didn't work. I have asked Earthlink why it
doesn't work. No answer so far.
