Will people with Verizon's PTT be able to communicate with Nextels'
customer's?  If not, I predict people jumping to Verizon for the better
coverage.

No they will not.  However, there service is going to make Nextel sorry!

i have been reading the posts on this subject since it started, and all
i can say is too pretty much all of you is this:
ALOT of you have only half the facts and then you put your own spin on
the rest. The facts are, Verizon is getting 2-way, no one really knows
how it will work (and i even work for them and i dont know a whole lot).
But what i do know is that A) it will go off of exsisting technology
that Verizon already has in place, B) It may be possible to 2-way other
customers, i.e. Nextel or Sprint, C) the phones will not be as big as
the Nextel phones and will be somewhat cheaper as well. Also, the only
reason that Sprint is carry the 2-way is because they get their low-end
digital and their Analog from Verzion(which does cost you extra). So
their 2-way will probably only work on the low end digital and analog
serive, now granted verizon's nor Sprint's 2-way services are out yet.
this is just based on the facts on both of the services as of now. As
for Nextel, they lost the exclusive rights to the 2-way as of Jan. 1st
of this year. Now they have tried to bring verizon into court over the
2-way but since they do not have the exclusive rights to it anymore, it
was unfounded and didn't happen. Another thing is the phones, Nextel's
phones are huge compared to Verizon's. Now with Verizon's 2-way phones,
they will be pretty much the exact size of alot of phones that are
already out now. Like Motorola (who owns 51% of Nextel, yet they are
making more than 2 2-way phones for Verizon when it first comes out,
which is very strange dontcha think) is coming out with the V60p, which
is the size of the V60i yet it's a 2-way phone. And alot of people who
have posted on here about this are all about downing one company over
the other. i sell Verizon and honestly i dont care, if it works for you
then i'm happy for you. HOWEVER, its a funny thing that most
construction/landscaper type of people who have Nextel, also have a
Verizon on the other side of the Nextel or right beside it. Plus Nextel
has one of the smallest digital networks in the country and they say you
can 2-way all over the nation but its a funny thing that some states
like GA have different frequencies that others like SC so you can't
2-way. Verizon's will not be a "radio type" service it will go off
exsisting technology it already has. This is my 2 cents and if you dont
like then fine, i'm happy for you disagreeing with me. but this is based
on current facts from all three companyies. One more thing, NO ONE
really knows what you are going to be able or not be able. All i know is
what the information i have actually gone out and looked for or from
what i have been told in meetings.

This would make perfect sense if Motorola bought Nextel as a
channel to sell their phones through. Motorola is not in the service
provider business. In this context its not strange at all for them to
own Nextel and sell phones through VZW.

actually it is, because of the fact that they are supporting a company
who is going to make them lose alot of their nextel customers. motorola
is using nextel as a channel to sell their phones, that is why they own
51% of them and why almost all of the phones nextel carries are motrola

I'm not so sure. Depends on how large the investment in Nextel is
relative to their overall phone sales. If they are simply maintaining
their interest in Nextel to sell phones they may not even care if
Nextel is profitable. If they can sell a relatively overwhelming
volume through other channels they could dump their interest
in Nextel or simply write it off.

Buy Nextel to promote and sell their iDen phones and technology.
Sell a few million phones through Nextel each year and additional
phones through any other channels they have. Now they have the
potential to sell many more millions through an alternative channel.
The investment in Nextel may have been worth it even if they write
it off now.  Maybe they see the Nextel channel as a dead end thats
not likely to go anywhere. Might not make sense to stay with it
simply because you bought into it some time ago.
