Not quite yet. I'd gloat now, and remind my family how slow traffic is, how
expensive it gets, and how it takes about two hours to wait in line for
dinner cuz of all the snowbirds during the winter... but with humidity there
of 100% and afternoon thunderstorms (it's only 18% humidity and NO rain at
all here!, if you take a shower and dry off, you are soaking wet as soon as
you walk outside in Tampa, but not here), they all bailed out of FL for AUG,
and are visiting friends and family up north, so it's sort of a phyric
victory at the moment. The gloating begins in ernest in November when they
get to spend the holidays with old folks, and I get to go to the
casinos/shows/food buffets (and the sports books, I like football) etc here
in Vegas :) Now I'm just happy with making email comparisons of steam baths
versus saunas....I'm preparing for it, wait a few months, and then "let the
gloating begin!" :)

Why LA and not Tampa? DEMOGRAPHICS! There are more drug dealers in LA!

Let's not talk about criminals. There seems to be a much higher percentage of
scam artists and frauds in Florida (probably due to the older population and
the fact that, by law, even if you sue and win a judgment against someone,
certain major assets are protected), and don't tell me there are no drug
dealers out there. :)
We have our own issues in SoCal, but Florida ain't exactly squeaky clean.

Uplink is pretty poor. Are they going to limit it like that when it
goes live?
It will be interesting to see if they can hit those DL speeds once there
are tons of users on the network.

Hard to say, but today (8/26/04) was a MAJOR disappointment! Not only was
EVDO not available, the thruput of 1XRTT was dismal at best.
I hope it's from them working on THAT site.Let's see what tomorrow
brings....
Keep your updates coming. Earthlink is offering 1x wireless (modem speed),
but I don't know if it's Verizon or Sprint. Verizon is trying to nudge me
to use their system, but are insisting on full retail pricing. And
yesterday ATTWS rep phoned and offered me a deal on the equipment (some, but
not much) and a modest discount on their unlimited data plan (pretty fast
with Edge coming soon). I know I need unlimited data, so the cost is pretty
similar between all of the carriers. So I am listening about connection
speed, reliability, and just general usability. I'm mostly in the Los
Angeles market with infrequent travels to the Northwest.
I could live with 1.4 M pretty easy. It's the modem speed that bothers me.

Will do. For the most part Verizon's wireless service has been good. I can't
really bitch about it NOT working well in downtown LA because it's not
really "ON" yet. I guess they are working on it here. When it is up it
screams. 1XRTT is pretty slow..usable...but slow.
I have lost ALL credibility in ATTWS. In past deals with them they have
proven to lie, cheat and mis-represent a LOT of things. While "EDGE" might be
around the corner, I simply can't trust ATTWS to be truthful with anything
anymore.
In this area, Verizon is NOT the cheapest, but they have been supportive,
admitted to mistakes and offered discounts when call on the carpeting. They
allowed me to purchase(with a $100 discount) the PC-5220 card before it was
even available in California, so I wouldnt have to buy another card when
1X-EVDO did become available. From a service standpoint they are HEADS above
ATTWS. ATTWS's motto has been(and always will be) WE DON'T CARE.....WE DON'T
HAVE TO...WE'RE ATTWS!

I don't know if I would call EDGE "pretty fast" - I think you mean the
higher speed UMTS which ATTWS is rolling out in select cities. EDGE is
about 100Kbps from what I hear (200Kbps max if they activate all the tower
"slots"). When I was choosing between VZW 1xRTT/1xEVDO and ATT EDGE, I read
a lot of problems on the ATT customer forums. This is a great place to stay
tuned to real world use of ATTWS stuff:
http://forums.attwireless.com/attws
If UMTS works out for ATT in the next few months, it might just keep them
from completely losing *all* their customers, LOL. Right now my money is on
VZW.
