I signed up for the North American Choice program based on that the
Verizon map on their website showed that Toronto was covered (their
map is VERY tiny, but Toronto does appeared covered).

Prior to leaving for Toronto I called verizon and had Canadian calling
explained to me.  The said it would be covered as long as the phone
doesn't say "roaming".

Well I haven't found an area within the entire metro Toronto area that
is not roaming.  Anyone know what I'm missing here?

Thanx

call customer care again.  your plan lets you to Canada without roaming.  My
SRW plan often says roaming, but my plan has no charge for roaming in the 12
western states

Andre

I had changed my plan to the North American plan last summer.  We were
traveling in Canada for over a month and still wanted to use our
cellphone.  When we first went to Toronto our phone started out saying
"roaming" so I contacted a rep.  He verified that I was indeed on the
plan and gave his extention if I had any further problems or charges
resulting from calling in Canada.  I think after our conversation or
even a download of network towers we went back  for another month to
spent in Newfoundland.  This time the phone always said "extended
network" in Canada along the way. I never saw a "roaming" sign again
and we never recieved any extra charges for calling back to the States.
Your minutes will apply as usual.  You can only use the phone for
calling,  the web (#777)  is not available because of the extended
network.  It's very nice if you travel to Canada regularly and still
want to call the States without any roaming charges.   I used  the plan
for about 7 wks and then switched back to the AC now that I'm back in
the States full time.

Sounds to me like you have the wrong PRL.  Do you know what PRL you have?
Someone here might know the proper one for North America's Choice.

Also, did you have America's Choice first then switch to North America's
Choice?  Did you update your PRL afterwards?

And a warning:  Don't update your PRL unless you're in your home area.

I'm on the National Single Rate plan with the Canada option and my phone
always shows roaming in Ontario.   I'm not charged for roaming on my bill.

OK, got it figured out.

The Verizon rep said I had to dial *228 (option 2) prior to leaving
the US to activate the new plan I had chosen and update my PRL
(prefered Roaming List).

So I had to drive down to the US boarder (but not cross) get on the US
Verizon network and do the update.

My phone now says "Extended Network" throughout Toronto.

Wish the rep would have told me all this when I switched plans on the
phone !!!!

Thanx for all the great responses!!!!

Hee, hee, and let it be a lesson to you- *228 OFTEN! Its always the
first ting they ask when you call with questions!

I switched to the Canada plan too and it worked well through Quebec. I
just had to remember to switch back before a certain date or incur
excess fees. It worked out OK. I like when the phone reps get it right.
