The "Verizon Wireless" banner is the "ERI" Enhanced Roaming Indicator. Its
purpose is to let you know when you are off network and may incur roaming
charges and was added because people didn't seem to recognize what the
triangle indicator was. I don't know the specifics on your phone but it
usually involves using a data cable to change a file.

thanks for your reply,
I don't suppose you would know how to go about doing that exactly?

You did read my response where I said I didn't know the specifics for your
phone (I don't) but gave you some good clues to use.

Check out howardforums.com
You need to edit the eir.bin file. Open with a Hex Editor, overtype Verizon
WirelessA with whatever you want where Verizon WirelessA was. After you save
the changed eri.bin file, overwrite the existing one on your phone and then
power your phone off then on. Make a Backup first.
