In the past anyway, switching plans never added onto the end of your
current plan; it just reset the start date of a new contract to today.
When I took the newest AC promo (with the share lines for $9.99) a few
days ago, the CSR said that my contract would only be extended by one
month, since I took the "old" promo only last month. Usually, these
promos only required a one-year contract, so if you were less than a
year into a two-year contract, there was no extension. But this may have
changed, may depend on region, yadda, yadda. I am in the Northern
California are, if it matters.

I called Verizon to switch to the new AC plan (from the Local Plan I have
now). The customer service guy said that my contract would be extended for 2
years from today. I asked why, and he said that it was because it was a
promo plan. So I asked him to tell me of the plans I could switch that were
not promo because I didn't want to extend my contract for 2 more years (mine
is 5 months from ending). He said he didn't have any. I said, how about one
year extension? He agreed, and switched me to the promo plan with one year
extension only. I guess everything is negotiable. Thanks.

No. Not negotiable. He was plain wrong. The promo plan
requires at least a 1 year commitment. As far as I know the
only thing VZW has going that requires a 2 year commitment
is New-Any-2, the additional reduction in price on a new
phone and, if you are establishing service, the additional
reduction on the price of activation.
