Hi, I recently purchased the Mobile Office Kit for my Samsung A670. I
installed all the software and was able to connect my laptop to the internet
via the phone with 1X service.
I noticed that the MOK installed the "Venturi client software" which I
assume does some kind of compression. I'm not having problems, but I'm
alway suspicious of things that get loaded up on boot and may interfere with
other software. Anybody have any comments on whether I should leave this
installed? And does it work on all net connections? Just wireless? Just
wireless on Verizon networks?
Another weird problem is the the laptop won't recognize the phone when it is
put in a docking station. I installed the kit with my laptop undocked, but
now, when I plug the phone in with the laptop in a different "docked"
configuration, it forgets that it installed all the modem and USB drivers
and asks to install them again. Even if I let it reinstall everything, it
still doesn't recognize the phone in VZAccess Manager. This is not a big
deal as I plan on using the phone as an internet connection when I'm on the
road with just a bare laptop, but it is odd that plugging the phone in
behaves so differently just because the laptop is in a docking station.

Venturi is "good". It takes a good MOK connection and makes it FAST. I'd
recommend you leave it installed, or you'll be disappointed with your
connection speed.
Concerning dock vs undock. Your computer gives you the option of
"configuring" unique setups for dock vs undock, or any other connection.
Just windows at its best, trial and error should take care of it. Remember,
that the venturi needs to be removed and installed last when you add network
adaptors. (no surprise, as they make a BIG deal of it during the install)

I would be wary of this software for several reasons:
1) As distributed (I have personal experience with v2.1), it hooks into
EVERY network adapter/protocol stack handler in the system. $(DEITY) help
you if something goes wrong.
2) There is a known security exposure in versions 2.1 (and earlier) that
effectively turn your computer into an open proxy. If your machine is then
connected to the Internet (without a properly configured firewall), some
spammer will eventually find it and use it to send spam to bunches of
victims. (For more info, see Bugtraq posting, 2003-05-16.)
3) The vendor (Fourelle) has, in my opinion, not taken this problem
seriously. They were notified on 2003-05-12 and stated they had a patch
which they had not published. After news of the vulnerability was
published, they posted the patch, with no explanation or details. This, in
my opinion, is terrible support and downright irresponsible. I wonder what
other "unpublished" problems are contained in this package?
Use it if you wish, but I'll wait for something from a vendor that behaves
in a more open, transparent and responsible manner.
