How to send an SMS from your PC without knowing carrier

Okay, I finally finally finally, through searching and searching found a
legit website that will send an sms to any cell phone without knowledge of
carrier.  My friend at Sprint PCS actually told me about it.  The cell phone
can even answer back, and it's completely free unlike most of those sites
that will do the same thing.

cellphonenumber@teleflip.com

It works with all North American carriers.  If you have questions just go
to:
www.teleflip.com

I have no affiliation with this website...I'm just so excited to have
finally found it.  Apparently it's been around for quite a while.  I'm going
to post this to all of the carriers news groups.

Worked right away for Nextel, < a minute.
Still waiting (>10 min) for 2 Verizon test messages.

I tested the site last week and it took over 3 hours to reach my verizon
phone. Others who tested it reported results similar to your Nextel results-
basically instantaneous.

I'd rather use http://www.phonenumber.com/reverse-phone to find the
carrier - then http://www.aipcom.com/support/email-finder.asp to look up the
domain (if needed). This prevents teleflip from ever using my address or the
cell number for spam purposes.

That doesn't work if the cell phone number has been ported to a carrier
other than where it originated.

I'm not disagreeing with you but while reading their FAQ I found this:
"Taking advantage of number portability (moving your number to a new
provider) should not affect receiving text messages through Teleflip. Note
that it may take up to a week before the change is active in our system"

God Bless,

Brian

It still shows my old carrier, and I ported more than a year ago.

it will always show the old carrier AFAIK, since they are assigned by blocks
of numbers (entire exchanges).

Number portability will always be a problem regardless of the system used,
unless you ask the person who they use or send bounced numbers to every
carrier - i.e., number@sprint, number@vtext, number@mycingular, etc.

I think you're giving them more credit than they're entitled; I doubt that Verizon (or any other carrier) could care less if a message to you is directed to

cellphonenumber@vtext.com (or whatever the domain name of the appropriate carrier)
         or cellphonenumber@teleflip.com
[or, if you have one, username@vtext.com]

the recipient will pay for the text message.   And if you send a message from your phone, I'm certain there's still a message charge even if the recipient is cellphonenumber@teleflip.com.

For the sender, it is more convenient because he only has to remember only one domain name and doesn't have to worry about any change in the recipient's carrier (unless a change in number also is involved); that's the service being provided by teleflip.com.

IMO, if one of my friends gave my cell number out on some website,
they wouldn't be my friend anymore.

It did not work to an AT&T phone.
