I am interested in an EV-DO phone. I understand all three can't be used as a
modem. Any prospects that one will be offered soon that does it?
Additionally, I am intrigued by the lightness (2.8 oz.) of the Samsung; the
LG seems huge. How do these two phones compare in sound quality and
reception, for example? Thanks in advance.

Any EVDO phone can add an unlimited data plan for $49.95/month.  Most
can be used as a modem to your computer

For those that do purchase the unlimited data plan and attempt to use
as a modem, you could be in for a shock, read about the guy who got a
$1430 bill for one month's data use:

I currently have both an older phone and a 1Xrtt data card, and I'd love to
upgrade to an EVDO phone that can do unlimited EVDO data. The new LG 8100
with bluetooth would be nice, once it is released. Anyway, looks like I can
save some money and increase data speed simply by upgrading to a single EVDO
phone? TIA.
