I'm looking at a comparison of cell phones on a wireless site and
notice that the Kyocera KX-1 doesn't have GPS while the others do, even
cheaper models.  What does the feature do exactly?  The Kyocera has a
Location option which can be enabled to allow the "network" to "share"
your position.  When disabled it supposedly allows the location to be
shared only with emergency services.  Is it just a matter of accuracy
with GPS vs. non-GPS phones?

you have to take these comparisons with a grain of salt. I used
phonescoop to check these phones and they aren't the most reliable for
the nitty gritty details. For instance they say the Kyocera KX-1
doesn't sync to a PC but clearly Kyocera sells a data kit for the phone
that does just that. I've seen all-digital phones listed as tri-mode
and so on. To really ge to know these phones you have to give a careful
reading of the manul and play with them.

On the Kyocera KX-1 I asked their teck support about being able to open
the contacts list and then key in a letter and go to the first
occurence of that letter in the phone book, They said id couldn't be
done, that non Kyocera did that, but my reading of the manuel I think
maybe it can.

One thing I didn't like about the UI for this phone after playing with
it in the store for a while was when you are in e.g. the settings, you
don't know what is set. Looking at the option to enable or disable the
Fast Find feature yo uhave to open it up and see what it says so makes
for extra steps. And there was no 'back' button, you ahve to wait for
it to time out and send you back to the previous menu or hit clear/end
button and start all over.

But to answer your question all the new phones should have GPS built in
for E911
