They registered it to avoid having someone else register it to put up a
complaint site. They registered it as the same time as they registered their
other domains, about the time the joint venture was formed.

Yes, and also verizonwirelesssucks.com, verizonblows.com, and
verizonwirelessblows.com.

But they failed to nab verizonsux.com and vzwsucks.com before someone
else got them, and vzwblows.com (which is still available).
