my free e815

David S - 25 Nov 2005 22:20 GMT On Sunday, Nov. 13, I decided to pole around in My Account on the vzw web site. Lo and behold, when I checked on upgrading to an e815, it said I was eligible for NE2 and my final price on the phone would be $0.00 after instant online savings. I thought about it for a few hours and ordered late that night.
First, everyone talks about how they get their new phones in 2-3 days. I ordered late Sunday, the online status said processing as late as Wednesday morning, then said shipped Wednesday night. The phone arrived Friday.
Second, I specified to ship it to me at work; they sent it to my home. Luckily, someone was there to sign for it.
After charging the battery, I tried to go online and activate it. Failed. Repeatedly. Finally had to call in. Then it took another few minutes before *228 would program it.
Lots of people have complained that the hinge is flimsy. Doesn't seem like it to me. I think it's just as solid as my now-semiretired VX4400, and if anything, the flip is harder to open (possibly because the 4400 is in a leather case; more on that below).
People also complain that it's bulky. Again, Huh?
I do now understand why everyone said the 4400 was a battery hog. The 815 lasts longer on its standard battery than the 4400 on its extended. I don't think I'll be buying an extended for this one.
As for the 815's highly vaunted reception, it might be just a teeny bit better than the 4400, but not enough to really mention. It has already dropped a call while I was sitting at my desk at work.
I can't quantify the reception, though, because I can't figure out how to get to the field test screen. Thanks to a recent thread on how to get into various models' service menus, I can get into there, but when I try to see the field test, it just goes back to the menu. I looked through Howardforums a bit, but couldn't find it there.
The speaker phone. I love it, but Amtrak's automated agent Julie hates it. She keeps confusing herself, even with the speaker volume turned down to minimum. No one else has given me any feedback on it, so I don't know if I have the famous echo problem.
I especially like the voice command function, but does it always verify CALL commands or only when it's not sure?
As for the camera, nice toy, could be useful in a pinch, but I'm not going to confuse it with a real professional digital camera. I already bought a trans flash card (128MB, $18.99, the only one they had at the tigerdirect outlet store). Someone mentioned that Realplayer can play the 815's video clips; I misremembered that tip and discovered that Quicktime can as well.
Can someone tell me what the latest software version is and whether I should take it into a store and have it updated? I have 8720_01.17.03 .
Oh, just remembered another question: is there a way to answer it in speakerphone mode without opening the flip? I know I just have to open it a bit and let it close again and the speakerphone will stay on, but even that requires two hands or a more coordinated single hand than I have.
Several people have said that they prefer a drop-in holster or pouch over a case that the phone fits into and stays there. I bought a generic one in a store, and decided in one day that I will be ordering a flip case like the one I have for my 4400. First, it can take too long to get it out of the holster case, and second, I already dropped it on blacktop while trying to put it into the holster.
I guess that's all for now.

Yeah, the case/holster dilemma. I tried a flip case on my VX4500 and it was always flipping open at inopportune times. I currently use a holster for the e815 which keeps the phone closed, but I have the other problems you mention, i.e. not being able to get it out fast enough to answer calls sometimes, and the phone is more vulnerable. When you get the flip case I'd be interested to hear if the e815 stays closed when worn on a belt in day to day use.

Have you (or anyone else reading this) tried it with a headset that has a send/end button? Can you make/answer/end calls with it still in the case/holster? Saw one like that in accessories for it, and wondered if I could leave it closed in a belt case, and just have the wire and earbud run up my shirt....

I know someone who uses a bluetooth headset and she doesn't open the phone when making and receiving calls. I haven't tried it with a "wired" headset yet.

Just trying to be frugal (okay, cheap).. the wired headset with send/end buttons is about $40, but the wireless headset with send/end is about $250! So I assume it works with the wireless headset, would like to know if the wired works the same way (While I have a bluetooth wireless headset, it's an older one that doesn't have the send/end), saw the wired one as an accesory on the verizon site, and wondered if that would work for now (not ready to buy a new wireless bluetooth headset)...Good to know it works with the bluetooth wireless, gives me hope it may also work with the much cheaper wired...

I was just poking (which BTW was the word that "poling" in the first post of this thread was supposed to be) around the displays at Best Buy and Circuit City yesterday and saw Motorolas in VZW packaging for $80-$100.

You can get pretty good BT headsets now for just a little more than the $40 that you say you'll pay for a wired one. I didn't know that they even made BT headsets that didn't have a button for 'end/send'....

Yup, have a Jabra BT-200 now they are up to BT-250 models... they are excellent though... got the option charger cradle (also has the bluetooth in it) with the 2.5MM jack that went in anything with a jack (cellphone, cordless phone, VOIP, work phone etc)... Course, they worked so well, they don't make em anymore! (headset/earpiece only paired to the charging cradle/with jack, so the phone itself can also pair with other devices that had bluetooth pairing, like the smart system in my vehicle). For what it's worth, it was pricey, but it was also one of the best sounding ones I ever used, and since I drive/live in an RV, it was a must to have hands-free.. Just a funny point.. the Jabra BT-250V and the optional charging cradle/jack (now with 8 hours of talk time) is actually $249.99 list... one cent less than $250.. course I did say about.... :)

The headset doesn't have a answer/end button on it?

In essence the earpiece pairs with the cradle/cable/etc and that leaves the phone itself free to pair with other devices if the other device needs to pair.
I got it a few years back when Verizon didn't have BT phones.... And as I said, doing it that way lets it work with anything that has a headset jack. Just to be clear there are TWO models of the BT-200... One for bluetooth phones, and one for NON-bluetooth devices.... I have the one for NON-bluetooth devices.. Nowadays, you can get a different model cradle that not only charges, but works as a BT interface, leaving the phone itself free to pair with something else..
There is now only one model (the BT-250) but you can get two different charging cradles, one that charges only, the other has BT and a cable/jack etc for any device with a jack...
For my needs, it makes way more sense to keep the old one/ or spend the extra $4 and use it with other devices... Actually I'm cheap and am just keeping the older one till it dies.. Unfortunately it only has one hour of talk time and no send/end :(
Just for fun, the headset is at: http://www.jabra.com/JabraCMS/NA/EN/MainMenu/Products/WirelessHeadsets/JabraBT25 0/JabraBT250

Don't know about a wired headset, but bluetooth headsets work very well with the E815...
No need to open the phone and it can still be in the holster or case..
