I'm in CA and will be here for at least another month. My Sprint phone
worked poorly so I switched to VZ. Much much better. The problem is that I
wanted to port my old TX number to the new phone. VZ says can't do it in CA
and that if I want my TX number, the port has to be done in TX, while I'm
physically there with the phone. They said that's why it's called *local*
number portability. Am I really unable to port my TX number to a phone
that's physically in CA?

I can't say for sure with Verizon, but with Nextel, the phone once
ported had to be powered back up initially in its home market.

From what I understood (and it may not have been a expert explaining
it) is when a change like that is done, certain 'commands' are sent
over the air, and only sent to your home market, or maybe even region
(i.e. entire state).

I could be wrong.. But I know for Nextel, for example let's say a
customer from Texas traveled to California. He lost his phone in
California. We couldn't reactivate a replacement phone in California,
he would be SOL until he got back to Texas. Granted this was about 5
years ago, but I don't believe that's changed.

When you get back home have it changed then. Unless you have already
canceled your nextel account.
If you did, then you can change it to another number once your back home. As
if your back home and someone calls you there going to be calling long
distance to Calif. even though your back in TX...

FedEx it to a bud back in Texas, get them to hit the right keys, then FedEx
it back to you-- two days $35, done...
