Speechfixer - 10 Feb 2006 00:18 GMT Tech Rep just verified the newest Verizon Moto E815 firmware flash to be version 8720_01.1E.00. Previous version was 8720_01.17.03. Does anybody know the changes in this newest version? Tech didn' know.

The odds of doing harm to the phone are much greater than doing good.
S.F. dude - 24 Feb 2006 03:32 GMT I waited a 10 days to get my new E815 phone when I ordered it on-line figured it would at least have the new software, I was wrong.

- Improved camera performance
- BugFix: Alarm clock previously didn't work. This update fixes it.
- Disables ##DIALUP phone-as-modem capability and sets up the phone so that tethering must be provisioned by VZW customer service (upon signup of the $60 per month BroadbandAccess/NationalAccess plan).
The third "fix" is (for SOME people) an important change in the phone's behavior, so bear that in mind depndingon what your connectivity habits are.

Bart - 11 Feb 2006 15:49 GMT I have updated my e815 to the new 1E.00 firmware and recommend it STRONGLY to anyone with this phone. A few points....
1. The widely reported "echo when on speakerphone" problem is totally solved on my phone. I had tried all the other workarounds and fixes (lower volume, reset phone, avoid voice dialing) without success.
2. Contrary to other reports, tethering to a computer using 1X is still very much alive. True, EVDO tethering is no longer possible, but Verizon has been taking drastic measures against EVDO users, so this change is actually a benefit. The ##DIALUP command no longer works, but that's because the e815 is already in data mode by default. To tether using 1X you must disable EVDO mode and alter your dialup configuration on the computer. See HowardForums for specific details.
3. The vibrate mode is now much stronger and the alarm now works as advertised.
4. There is a huge improvement in camera image sharpness and reduced artifacts, particularly in indoor photos. Motorola actually reduced the color depth captured from 280K to 136K. This is because the sensor could not capture 280K, resulting in excessive interpolation and artifacts.
There are many other improvements in this version of the firmware, so a trip to your Verizon store is advised.

I've never done a flash update. Are there instructions on how somewhere?
kevin weaver - 11 Feb 2006 22:43 GMT > So it looks like the new updates might be worth it. I've never done a > flash update. Are there instructions on how somewhere? You cant do it yourself. You have to take the phone into a verizon store to have the tech do it.
vuser - 11 Feb 2006 23:51 GMT Thanks Kevin. And what do we find the going price for our neighborhood V- tech to do this might be?
kevin weaver - 12 Feb 2006 00:22 GMT > Thanks Kevin. And what do we find the going price for our neighborhood V- > tech to do this might be? It's free.
vuser - 12 Feb 2006 01:35 GMT OMG. Didn't know the word existed in Verizonspeak. Thanks again. I'm going to take advantage......before the policy changes. ;-)
Richard Ness - 11 Feb 2006 23:59 GMT Wrong!!! Sorry....
Lots of folks do it themselves.

You may have to do some reading on Hofo and get the right software, but there are many of us that certainly have done it - at our desk at home.

He can take it to the verizon store and they will do it for FREE! Why take a chance ?

If the flash fails you can boot the phone into boot load mode manually with a few keypad pushes and then re-flash.
kevin weaver - 12 Feb 2006 00:26 GMT > Wrong!!! Sorry.... > [quoted text clipped - 11 lines] >> You cant do it yourself. You have to take the phone into a verizon store >> to have the tech do it. I just went and checked that link. The file is "Untested" Why not have the tech do it and not worry if its been done right or wrong.
vuser - 12 Feb 2006 01:35 GMT Thanks to Richard for the response and with the correct software massaged just right, a user can do it. I'm not far from the local V-store so I will let them do it and hopefully eliminate the possibility of getting something hosed up.
Richard Ness - 12 Feb 2006 02:47 GMT Some just want to have more than VZW will 'allow'. Or should I say what the phone was supposed to do.
Seem edits, etc give back most of what VZW took away, when they got greedy and lobotomized Bluetooth, etc.
I have full DUN, OBEX, etc, etc which you will NOT get if you have them do it.

Just some info, whether you do the flash yourself or have VZW do it for you, the new firmware disables the phones DUN. So if you depend on DUN I would think twice about getting this upgrade.

So if you depend on >> DUN I would think twice about getting this upgrade. > > Nope. It just disables the EVDO DUN. The 1X DUN still works. Not completely true. With the older firmware, my Nokia 770 connects through the E815 (locked at 1X) with no problems. With the new firmware (also locked to 1X), it begins to connect then throws an authentication failure. I've not been able to find any combination of settings on the Nokia that allow it to work (the Nokia has fewer "tweakable" settings than a PC has).
I've flashed my E815 back to the original firmware - DUN with the Nokia is the reason I upgraded to the E815 in the first place.

This worked for me and others.

Lots of info on the internet on how to do this.
Google is your friend.
CharlesH - 13 Feb 2006 00:43 GMT > Not true. I and countless others have flashed my own 815 with the new > firmware. Lots of info on the internet on how to do this. I know that lots of people, do their own flashing, but if you are flashing it with the standard VZW software, why not just let VZW do it, and have them sort it out if the flash process goes bad or introduces flakeyness (which sometimes happens)? Either way, seem edits are lost with the flash, and have to be redone. Flashing is a lot more risky than seem edits.
joel@exc.com - 13 Feb 2006 17:51 GMT I went into a VZW store today to have my 815 flashed. I learned two things:
1. It takes at least an hour.
2. They think that sometimes flashing the phone erases all the user information.

When a tech says he "thinks" that "sometimes" . . . is a sign to run away.

First - it's faster than running to the store and waiting...and waiting...and waiting...
Second - not all VZW stores have the equipment or ability to flash firmware. You have to hunt around.
Third - you learn by doing!
BrandonCoop - 24 Feb 2006 17:32 GMT Do you know of any good sites that explain how to re-enable EVDO modem functions that I had prior to this new firmware? I can't find any sites that explain it for the newest frimware. Any help would be appreciated!

Richard Ness - 24 Feb 2006 18:09 GMT My understanding is that it's being blocked at the authentication. You can connect, but you can't authenticate, so it's not on the phone. It's VZW blocking it at the switch.

zwerl1@yahoo.com - 14 Feb 2006 10:38 GMT Can anyone tell me if the phonebook is erased by the flashing - if it is done at a Verizon store?
J Collins - 14 Feb 2006 12:39 GMT The phonebook is not erased. I had to re-customize my "loud detail" for all ring settings, as well as my wallpaper, the way the contacts were viewed, and the contrast/brightness, but I believe that is all I had to re-do after the flash. Shortcuts and phonebook were not affected by the flash. Also the passwords go back to default (not voicemail, just the "security codes").

CellGuy - 14 Feb 2006 14:04 GMT > Can anyone tell me if the phonebook is erased by the flashing - if it > is done at a Verizon store? No, whether done by VZW or yourself. Your pics and ringtones stay as well.
