think of doing is upgrading to a t650 and swapping the t600 on my
wife's line (we have a family plan). my question am i going to be hit

Depends... Is the $45 data plan still offered?
If your wife isn't going to use data you can opt for the
"pay-as-you-go" plan which is strictly usage based
on bytes, no monthly charge. Call and ask if they have
the 600 classified as a "PDA" phone? You would expect
that but it pre-dated their putting that restriction in the
billing system so it might not be on the list.

or if you're feeling frisky, you could google shadowmite and follow his
easy to understand instructions on how to get around the data plan and
be able to connect to the internet on your PDA.  i did it on my treo
650 and it works quite well.  just make sure you follow all the steps
carefully.  good luck with either one, and on finding a verizon store
that still carries the 650.  most of the ones that i've seen only have
the 700, which i wouldn't recommend to anyone.
