I haven't gotten a subsidized phone from VZW in over 3 years. I've
been out of contract for the last year and with the rimarly line and
three hung off of it I'd like to stay that way.
I've found good deals on Ebay on used phones, bought some prepay
InPulse phones for my parents (they are two of the lines) and I bucked
up for a Razr. In the end I may not have any good reason other than I
feel more comfortable not being in contract with them.

Generally, you can upgrade about 2 - 3 months before your contract is up.
Check a Verizone Wireless Store. You pay too much, if you pay retail.
