I recently got two new phones, moving from the V60s to the V276 (needed
phones that are compatible with the Motorola Professional Hands Free Car
Kit). One Verizon store charged me $10 for my phone book transfer.
Another Verizon store didn't charge for my wife's phone book transfer,
mumbling something about her being a "merit" customer. What is a Merit
customer.

The only thing I don't understand about the "merits" plan is the early
upgrade. According to the material they sent me I can upgrade a phone
every 12 months at the lowest promo price but I would also need to renew
the 2 year contract each time. This seems disingenuous since say I get a
new phone every year for five years at that point I would have 5 years
left on my contract.

My understanding is that whenever you renew your
contract the term is from the day you renew it. So you
would never have more than 2 years left on your contract.

I get the feeling that every time you renew, you start a new 2-year
contract. i.e. with one year to go, you get a new phone and change
to a new 2-year contract.

Hmm, my wife's plan is a $35 plan minus an 18% discount, so she
certainly doesn't qualify for Merits status.

i just bought a xv6700 sunday and they upped me to the 79.99 plan. When i
went to get accessories 5 minutes later they said merit customers get 25%
off and i got the discount.

Recently upgraded my wife & daughter's phones at a VZW kiosk inside a
Circuit City (Springfield, VA). They did the phonebook transfers for free
(it never occurred to me that it would cost money--and I didn't ask). In
fact, I asked about the xfer after having already paid for the new phones
and had already signed the papers/charge slip. Perhaps that's the time to
ask. :-)
Good thing it was free, since they were rather imperfect transfers (not all
of the numbers got transferred). I've never hear of "merit" customers.
