I had an e815 for a few days back in December. I was able to use
Bluetooth dialup networking and use the phone as a modem, accessing the
National Access network via either Bluetooth or a USB cable.
Is that still possible with recent vintage e815 phones? I have heard
that a seem edit was now necessary to use the phone as a modem because
Verizon has updated the firmware.

I haven't actually seen the newest crop of e815's, but I'm hearing
reports that the latest firmware slaps the standardized Verizon GUI on
there. That most likely means that the old ##DIALUP trick doesn't work
anymore.
It's the mean reason I'm starting to want out, and don't mind paying the
ETF to leave. I have a Blackberry with VZW now, but the novelty of
having my e-mail everywhere with me has worn off, and I'm ready to go
back to using a regular old cell phone. Problem is, on VZW it seems
they almost all have that horrible GUI now.
I'm discovering I can't have it all. I can either choose great
equipment and great high speed EVDO tethering but crappy CS, OR I can
choose wonderful customer service, but horribly restrictive policies on
tethering and phone interface customization.

I have 4 e815's... 3 have recently been flash upgraded to the latest
firmware, and the 4th already came with the new software.
I have the same UI on all 4 phones that I always had. No changes
here... except that the phone that came with the latest software
pre-istalled has some of the settings like "Contacts" and "Recent" in
lowercase, while the older phones show the words in uppercase.
