Best phone for renewal

Hi folks, I'm up for a "new every two" phone and have been reviewing the
posts here but cannot decide on a clear winner.

I live in the Boston area and I don't travel a lot other than about 45 miles
roundtrip to work each day and some driving in the Nashua N.H. area.

I've always liked tri-mode phones because they seem to work on little
off-roads where digital phones have failed me in the past, and in general
tri-mode phones seem to disconnect my calls less than digital (but perhaps
this is due to other factors as well).

Overall, I'm not totally sure that I need a tri-mode due to the fact that i
dont' travel so much but somehow i feel more secure with them.

My current phone is a v710 which I like and the most important features to
me are: quality of calls/reception, great speakerphone, no drop calls (well,
within reason).

I do not tend to like LG phones.

I've read up on the 815, 325 and Razr (I realize two of these are digital)
but cannot come away with a clear winner and different people here have said
good things about all of these, perhaps the most good comments on the 815,
followed by the 325 and then the Razr.

Anyway, any wisdom sharing is appreciated.

Thanks in advance and happy father's day!

P.S. - I'd give a donation to the charity of choice to the person that comes
up with a mechanism by which a dropped call produces a signal (or some other
notification) other than having to look at the display, so that it's evident
the call has ended.  My pet peeve is when I'm talking on the phone and the
call drops and you just keep talking cause you have no idea that the calls
been dropped.

I had the 815 and returned it for a few reasons. the flip is week with the
leather case on it. The slightest movement away from the ear would cause it
to close. Without the leather case, Not sure.

I returned the 815 and got a LG. Liked it, But during a firmware upgrade
verizon took away a few things that I wanted. Complained and was able to get
a new phone. I got the Razr.

No reception problems with the Razr as there is no ext. ant. Bigger display.
thinner and it works great.

The Razr has a "Call drop tone" :) It has beeped once in the past. As in my
area I always have 4-5 bars showing.
My speakerphone works great also.

I use bluetooth a lot. And the biggest reason I returned the 815 was the
echo I got when I used bluetooth. The others could hear it but I could not.
Motorola told me there was no fix at the time as they were not aware of the
problem. I had two weeks to return it so I could not wait to see if they
ever got around to it or not.

I think you will like the drooped call tone. : )
Good Luck.

so, the call drop tone does exist!  thank you very much for the information.
from what i read the 815, 325 and Razr are all good phones, i just have to
decide how important or relevant tri-mode is for me in the boston area.
i'll probably check out the Razr, use it for two weeks and test it.

thanks again!

Almost by definition, tri-mode won't do you any good in the Boston area,
because Verizon has no analog transmitters here. IIRC, the only place in New
England where Verizon uses analog is in far northwestern Vermont. OTOH, I was
in and around Burlington last summer and was able to use my digital-only phone
with no problem.

thanks, that's good information; especially since i live in boston but work
in burlington.

i'm leaning towards either the e815 or the Razr, so i guess i'm going only
digital now.

thanks again.

Many phones have an alert for signal/no signal.
Not exactly a call drop tone but closely correlated.
I have a Kyocera. With this alert turned on the phone
makes one alert when it loses the signal (no signal)
and a different alert when it acquires a signal. If it loses
the signal while on a call you will have lost the call.
It is still possible to drop a call while still having a
signal due to the noise level (rare) so it's not exactly
a call drop tone.

thanks, i'll have to play with my v710 and see how this may work for me, as
well as check out these options on new phones i may upgrade to.

although, i don't really need to hear an alert upon acquiring a signal, only
when incurring a dropped call, but beggars cannot be choosers  :-)

thanks again.

Whaddaya know, I just looked through my E815 settings and under the
"Network Info" menu, there's a Call Drop Tone option. Nice!

I'm a newbie here, jumping in just because last week I did my new every
two and got a Razr for me and a V325 for my wife.  Gotta tell ya as an
all-around communication tool the V325 may beat the Razr! Small, easy
to handle (Razr's of course superthin, but it doesn't fit the hand very
well). Has analog. Screen slightly smaller but very bright.
Speakerphone, though a bit tinny. Razr has bluetooth (a plus) and
supposedly can download MP3's from your computer but I haven't got that
working yet and judging from som other forums I'm not alone--some kind
of driver compatibility problem. I'm happy with the Razr but the V325
is a super phone.

That's pretty cool that you found the call drop feature; I cannot find the
call drop setting on my v710.

Also, thanks to everyone who replied and contributed great information in
this thread - very much appreciated  :-)

Settings -> Network Info -> Call Drop Tone

I recommend the E815.  I have used it for nine months and like it
because it holds the signal, has loud audio and ringers, has a high res
screen, large keypad, excellent bluetooth, speakerphone, and voice
recognition.  It's also sturdy construction and is currently priced
very competitively for a high quality phone.

thanks, i certainly have read many positive reviews here and elsewhere about
the e815.

i will have to drop by a verizon center, talk to some reps, hold the phones
and decide which to go with.

i do currently have a v710 which i heard is similar to the e815, although
mine is tri-mode and the 815 isn't; and the 815 has vcast.

i think my choice is narrowed down to the e815 and the Razr - guess i'm
going to try the digital only path.

If you have a Costco card, or friend with one, you might try the cell phone
kiosk.  The phones are backed by Costco so you do not need to buy a warranty..
You also get accessories.  May pay to ignore new every two deal.

PLEASE post back.

thanks, that's also good to know although there's not really a costco close
to where i live, however, there is one near my family in NH and my dad has a
$150 certificate there.

I don't think anybody's mentioned this, but IMO one thing any mobile phone
should have is an external battery charger. LG did not have that when I got my
VX7000s, but came out with one a couple of months later. We have three
batteries for our two phones, and one is on the charger at all times. My wife,
in particular, hates to be bothered to remember to charge her phone. So when
it shows low power or goes dead, she simply swaps out the battery.

I've owned the 815 for a few months now, and on balance, wouldn't give it up
for anything else I've seen out there.

That being said, if Bluetooth weren't an issue, I would have preferred the
tri-mode also, and I really like the v325. Seems a tad sturdier, uses the
better charging port AFAIK. Appears reception is on par or near the 815.

The spring for the flip (815) is definitely weak with a leather case on it.
I've checked others' and new ones and they are the same. It really hasn't
presented a problem but I can see where it might, it's just an annoyance.
Again, the little charging port hasn't been a serious issue for me, just
another annoyance on an otherwise superior phone.

As far as the speakerphones, I am disgusted with the speakerphone on EVERY
Verizon phone I've tried, compared to Nextel's Motorola-built phones of
comparable size. Can't figure out why they can't (or won't) put one in that
you can actually use on the car seat next to you. Maybe you can, but maybe
your car is quieter than mine. We use Nextel at work, and I often use the
speakerphone. My personal VZW service is far better, but the speakerphone is
near-useless, comparatively.

No one can tell you whether you'll be sorry giving up analog. The answer to
that is the v325----but you won't have Bluetooth.

Good Luck!!

Dean

All of my phones can be set to beep when a call is dropped. All the way from
my first Siemens M46 to my RAZR.

I sell VZW in NE Arizona, so I see a lot of phones. Some good, some
some not so good and some junk. We are in a mountainous area that VZW
call 'challanged' (their words, not mine). I just upgraded my wife to
the Moto 325, Reasons- I no longer has that stupid charging port on the
bottom that has been troulesome sine the V120.  It is a trimode and she
travels places where the digital may be sparse. It is more solid that
the Razr with more talk time. She would run a fat battery down on a LG
VX4400 in 14 hrs. Not because of the battery, but because of heavy
usage. It also has the best camera on it, next to my regular digital
camera.
FWIW, it is kind of like a grownup version of the 710
There should be a service change tone alert in menu, you just have to
find it.

The Razr is rated at 200 mins talk time, Standby time at 325 hours
Moto 325 is rated at 200 mins talk time, Standby time is 200 hours.

Of course if the moto 325 goes into amps mode then both standby and talk
time will be less. 30% at a minimum.
Above specs are from verizon's web page.
