Yesterday, in a strong AWS GSM area my phone briefly went to a Cingular
display on the screen & then went back to AWS in about 5 minutes.  I realize
that the merger is a long way from being final but might Cingular already be
playing with the towers?

Do they usually come with a new gsm phone or do you have to buy them
separately?

My son was near a friend's house with the cellphone. Urban area; nothing
oddball. He tried to use it and got a message that said something like
"for emergency use only".
What's that about?

I have a Free2go phone. I was in theGalleria, Houston, TX. The phone display
was "Extended Network" or "Roam". I pressed a speed-dial number and pressed
Send. The call did not go through. Instead, female voice: "Enter the phone
number you wish to call." .. I dial the phone number ...

I recently purchased an S56 from a cingular customer. I'm trying to
unlock it using FREIA v10 to use w/my ATTWS service.
I'm having no success getting the program to read the phone @ all. I
have a serial cable and a usb cable w/proper drivers. Both cables work

The best of all worlds, when the Cingular acquisition happens, is that
my great plan stays in place PLUS, since we'd be Cingular customers,
they'd add rollover minutes to the plan.

I've been a TDMA customer since 1999.  Have 3 lines.  Am perfectly satisfied
with the feature set that I have now.  No need for data, or surfing the web
on 2" screen.
Does GSM offer any advantage over TDMA when comparing the features that are

Has anyone actually seen a news report or anything that they can point to that
says that AT&T has signed this roaming agreement with Cingular for GSM service
that we have been seeing reported here?
I ask for two reasons.

As a TDMA user, I'm not up to speed on GSM's alleged benefits.  I know that
a GSM call cannot be handed off to a TDMA or an Analog tower, so what is the
benefit of having a GAIT phone?  Is it that you can initiate a call on
analog if there is no GSM?

Let's say I'm out in the middle of Nevada.  There are no ATT towers
for hundreds of miles.  In fact, there are no GMS towers from any
carrier around.  Will I be able to make an emergency call, 911?
I'm thinking of switching to ATT, but I really like my Sprint phone
