It is now possible to enter a pin number instead of having to sign
for Mastercard credit card purchases in Australia.  So you can dust
off that pin code that they sent you 10 years ago and actually use it.
Visa was done 2 years ago apparently.

Now I wish to go a prepaid phone  and was wondering if I can use my current
mobile  Sony EricssonWalkman W810i  and how would I do this ?

Using an Optus SIM (actually Soul Communications).
SMS is limited to 160 characters since I changed phones (Palm Treo 650
to Palm Centro).
Previously on the 650, 160 characters x 3.
