My GSM phone service provider has roaming agreements with two networks
in Japan: NTT DoCoMo and Vodafone. Does this mean it's possible to use
my plain old GSM handset in Osaka? Anyone who has done so, please let
me know.

not work; now I hear we have GSM; before I do this again; how do I find out
definitively.  I don't trust salesmen.

I've used my phone in several countries, but not until I landed in the USA
did it offer to update the time to the local time zone. While in the USA,
each time I moved to a new time zone, the phone let me know and offered to
update the time again.
