Im intrigued how it is possible to see infa red light coming from the port

What have I done!!! I've just tried to unlock a Nokia 3310e following
instructions found on the web. The phone was locked to an Orange 'Just
Talk' sim card & I obtained it via the Avon/Orange offer. The
procedure appeared to be successful. I tried using my virgin sim card

I have an Nokia 3510 on Orange OVP (Virgin) - a tarrif that Orange no longer
offer to new customers.  I am going to the state soon and need a tri-band
phone.  Orange told me that if I upgrade and stay with Virgin OVP I would
have to buy an unsubsidised phone at £250+

And how the hell do i lock the keypad? the manual says press the triangle
key then within 3 seconds press the 2 dots button. can't get it to work.
