OK so I can't use my O2 SIM for Internet on the lappy anymore so this

If I purchase a pay as you go phone from a UK network, say O2 or
orange, is it possible to take it to france or italy, put a french or
italian sim card in it and use it in europe? And if so, what else if

I have an O2 Online account - Had it for about a month.
When I go to view my bill none of my GPSR is being charged, this isn't
listed in unbilled and the final bill. I do use it for checking POP3
email plus generally using O2 active.

mobile internet is ok & connects fine,i have had the combined gprs/mms
settings sent from the o2 website & saved & activated them,i also called o2

I have had internet access working OK at 9.6k data rate, with a
bluetooth connection to the phone.
Can anyone confirm that GPRS would also work?
The other bluetooth device is a tablet PC running Windows XP SP2.
