If you go to a proper SE service point it will be free within 12 months of
purchase.

Apparently the R3C release speeds Java up by about 30% or so.

What other features does the firmware upgrade have?

You could have used google for that but ok, here are some known new
features/bug fixes (found here:
http://www.mobiledia.com/forum/topic5794.html):

1. Phone seems to be working fine.

2. Menus load a lot faster. Delay in response is hardly noticeable.

3. JAVA applications run much better and smoother. Better support for JAVA
applications. Some games that did not run on R1A now runs on R3C. Java
performance is remarkably improved, both loading time and runtime
performance. Monster Land is playable on it now.

4. Playback on recordings are now played on the loadspeaker. No need to
listen to recordings as if you are listening to a phone call. This new
feature does NOT act like a speakerphone. It only playbacks recorded audio
on the loudspeaker.

5. Clock on standby screen has more rounded font.

6. Now you can copy individual phonebook entries from the SIM to the Phone's
memory. This is done via Phonebook->Advanced->Call from SIM->then select the
contact you want->More->Copy to phone. No facility yet to copy individual
contacts from phone to SIM.

7. Camera looks pictures look sharper and better. In R1A, only brightness
control (Up and Down joystick on camera mode) is available. Now, saturation
control (Left and Right on joystick on camera mode) is already available.

8. My sounds memory usage is now reported. In R1A, the total memory is
reported as "0kb" and you have to click on the My sounds to get a listing of
sounds with the corresponding memory usage per sound.

9. Editing (add effects) pictures process faster. NEW TRICK HERE: I found
that when I edit a picture using picture editor in the phone, the saved file
size is smaller. My sample started at 50kb then after adjusting the
brightness, the picture is now 36kb. Reducing picture size by editing them
on phone reduce the quality significantly. I found that the "brightness"
effect has the least effect on picture quality. So what I do is to first
insert a picture that is darker by about 40% then edit in the phone with the
picture effect.

10. Turning ON the phone makes the same single "clang" sound just like in
turning OFF the phone. Before, when I turn on my phone, I just see the
little Red LED light a little bit and here a very faint wave type of sound.
Turning OFF the phone gives me this "clang" sound. Now, the "clang" sound is
there on both ON and OFF.

11. Animated gif images now playing much faster than before. I tested with a
120x115 gif, the frame rate is about 60% of that on PC. I remember it was
about 10%.

12. The "increasing volume" effect while playing ring tones in "My sounds"
is removed.

13. It couldn't display Chinese in java Canvas. It can now. It's probably
because of "prgCXC125585_CHINA_2". Liuyidaocn is from Singapore and the new
firmware on his T610 is R3C004_prgCXC125585_CHINA_2. Please note that the
original post is based on my firmware of R3C004_ASIAN_LATIN_3.

14. "Resend" text messages. If you look in "Sent" text messages, highlight a
sent message and press "More" and there is now a facility to "Resend" a text
message. Note that this is different from "Forwarding" a text message.

15.When vibrate is ON, calendar and timer alarms also vibrate.

Mexx

16.T9 text input mode: When replying to message, pressing the joystick
accepts the word. When not in T9, joystick press sends message.

How can I check the current version of the firmware?
I haven't updated the phone yet, it was bought about 2-3 months ago, but I
seem to have some of the features you listed as new, some however seem to
lack.
Thanx,
Tarik

P.S. Sorry for the e-mail, clicked the wrong one ;)

You can Check the SW Version by doing follow Steps:

Whith the Joy on your Phone do: right ; * ; left ; left ; * ; left ; *

If you do so, you´re login to the Service Menu on your Phone.

remember though, that if/when you have the firmware updated, it will wipe
everything bar original settings off of your phone, these include contacts,
sms' and any games that you have d/loaded. Some games you may be able to
re-d/load free, if it  is within a certain time period. It is not possible
to backup these games, or so I was told be SEUK, please tell me if I was
informed wrongly.

Hi BigStu

I brought my T610 in for a firmware update twice by now, all data was still
on it (even my settings, mophun and JAVA games).
The guy in the service centre told me this was normal with SE phones.
(I used to having NOKIA phones before, all data was wiped on FW-update.)

btw: this is in switzerland...

thanks for that info, it gives me a little bit of hope. I am still gonna get
it done, just in the new year rather than before Chrimbo.
